Hi I am a marketing student and I was wondering what are the requirements or what do you look for when hiring marketers to work for Penguin? The skills, experience, etc required? Thank you :)
Honestly, it really depends on the position, but things that never hurt are:
Office experience of any kind - People like to know that you’ve worked in an office environment before, that you know how to use basic programs like Excel and Word and Outlook, and that you’re familiar with the daily rhythms of office work.
Demonstrated passion for reading, especially in the genre you’re looking to work in. - This is really necessary in marketing. I can’t stress that enough. You would probably guess that the lion’s share of the reading in a publishing house is in editorial, and maybe you’d be right about that? But in marketing we read A LOT. Like ALL THE TIME. Everybody is expected to know the list insofar as is reasonable (obvi, you can’t read 650 books a year; I mean, maybe you can, but you’d be the exception by a long shot), which requires reading.
Demonstrated knowledge of the industry, particularly the company for which you’re applying. - It’s always a good idea to mention a few frontlist titles from the house you’re applying to—if possible the actual division (like, if you apply to a PYRG job but your cover letter is all about The Help, which is a Penguin adult title, it might get confusing as to what exactly you’re interested in doing at Penguin)—in your cover letter, and if you come in for an interview, to be able to talk comfortably about some of the titles that house has recently been published. If someone, for example, came in for an internship interview today and talked to me about our Breathless Reads campaign, I’d be really impressed!
So yeah, that kind of stuff. And none of it is specific to Penguin—it’s relevant to most, if not all, publishing jobs.
do you only give ARCs to blogspot blogs or do you also give ARCs to book blog's on tumblr?
We’re open to including bloggers of any platform to our galley mailing lists, but we can’t guarantee that just because a galley of a certain title (or list of titles) is requested that it will be sent. More about requesting galleys from us here.
Oh my gosh! Okay so I have read Legend recently. Do you think Marie Lu will write a second? I sure hope so. The ending provides the ability to write a second book. She must!
Hi there! The answer to this question is a firm YES—there is a sequel to LEGEND called PRODIGY that will be out on January 29, 2013! There is also a third book in the series, but we don’t have a confirmed title or publication date for it yet.
