Who’s your favorite author, living or dead? Emily Bronte.

What’s your favorite thing about your book? The final line.

If you could spend one year on a deserted island with one character from literature, who would you choose? Artemis Fowl, because I used to have a crush on him— and because he could certainly get us off the island in some brilliant way.

Where do you write? I wrote The Girl With Borrowed Wings in the US (New Hampshire, Mississippi, and Iowa), Costa Rica, Scotland, Thailand, the UAE, France, and Sri Lanka. (Very fitting, considering that the story’s about flying.)

Who is your favorite hero or heroine of history? Maybe Peter Singer, for writing Animal Liberation.

Do you tweet? What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever tweeted? I don’t… but I think the word ‘tweeted’ is pretty funny even on its own.

What is your favorite season? Summer.

If you could teleport anywhere in the known universe right now, where would you go? I’d stay right here, sitting on a dog-bed in my parents’ house in the Emirates (while my poor, patient dog sleeps on the floor waiting for me to get off). When I was nineteen I decided that the world is open, so if I stay anywhere nowadays, that means it’s the place I’ve really chosen to be.

Do you have any writing rituals? I change the font a lot, to try to see the text as though someone else wrote it. That sometimes works.

What is your idea of earthly happiness? Finding circumstances which make you the most yourself as possible.

What is the best concert you’ve ever been to? I’m tone-deaf… I never appreciated music until I began making up stories behind the songs. That helps. My brain’s very story-oriented. For example, when I listen to ‘Part of That World’ from The Little Mermaid, for some reason I always imagine that I’m showing the video clip to a time-traveling Victor Hugo. (I bet someone, somewhere, out there reading this is going to say, “Hey! Me too!”)

What are you currently working on? A book about a girl who’s devoted to her brother even though (or because) he was born without a heart.
