Meg recommends…BITTERBLUE by Kristin Cashore!
I read and adored Graceling and Fire long before I worked at Penguin, so when I heard we were publishing Bitterblue, I constantly harassed the editor for the manuscript. When it finally came in—oh man, I was not disappointed. As with the first two books, I was completely captivated by the world Kristin created, of gracelings and castles and magic. I even did that thing where I’m so engrossed in a novel I basically withdraw from society until I finished the book!
I’m pretty into politics, so I found all the political intrigue fascinating. It wasn’t just that I constantly second guessed who could be trusted; Kristin also included hints about revolutions in other kingdoms, so it also became a question of not whether Bitterblue could rule, but how she would go about it. I also loved that my favorite characters from Graceling have a part in this story. I won’t go into details of what happens with Katsa, Po, Raffin, and Giddon, but let me tell you, there are just as many laughs and swoon-worthy moments in Bitterblue as there were in the other two books. And! I love that Bitterblue’s own love story is non-traditional; something I always find so refreshing in a YA fantasy. So basically, there is a lot to love about this book and series. Now Kristin just needs to write another book set in the Graceling Realm…
