We can’t WAIT!
Today we have another Breathless Reads author on our Penguin Teen Author Spotlight and we couldn’t be more excited! Lili Peloquin has crafted the sort of novel that keeps you on the edge of your seat with THE INNOCENTS - whether from the mysterious upper-crust happenings in the coastal town of Serenity Point, Connecticut or the dreamy and slightly dangerous boys Alice and Charlie find there. We’re already waiting for the second one and The Innocents isn’t even out yet! But let’s stop the chit-chat and find out what makes Lili Peloquin tick!
Name: Lili Peloquin
Novel: The Innocents
Available: October 16th, 2012
Who’s your favorite author, living or dead? Scott Fitzgerald. (Did you notice that I called him Scott, like we’re friends?)
What’s your favorite thing about your book? The atmosphere. I see The Innocents as a hybrid teen soap opera and whodunit with ghost story elements thrown in, as well. (There’s no actual ghost in the book, but a ghostly presence hovers above it.) It has—or at least I hope it has!—a twisty plot and a haunted, smoldering mood and an air of mystery that’s both stealthy and seductive. The Innocents is a gothic mystery, so it should leave the reader with an unsettled, creeped out feeling.
If you could spend one year on a deserted island with one character from literature, who would you choose? I’d say Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s because she says fun things and you’d have nothing to do to pass the time on a deserted island but talk. Holly would probably be pretty useless in a natural setting, though. Roughing it doesn’t seem like her thing. Nor is it mine. We wouldn’t last long, is what I’m trying to say. Pretty soon I’d be wishing I went with Robinson Crusoe or one of those guys from The Hunger Games or some other macho type. Oh well.
Where do you write? In my apartment, at my desk, underneath a poster of Buffy and Spike making out. What? That’s not weird, right?
Who is your favorite hero or heroine of history? Marilyn Monroe. She knew how to make an exit.
Do you tweet? What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever tweeted? The answer to the first question is, yes. The answer to the second is, I’m far too modest to say!
What is your favorite season? The summer because that’s the season The Innocents is set in. Plus, it’s the best-looking season, in my opinion, and I’m basically a shallow person.
If you could teleport anywhere in the known universe right now, where would you go? Well, I live in New York and New York is my favorite place on the planet so I’d probably stay put. Plus, my guy’s here.
Do you have any writing rituals? Yes, I get up early and go to my desk and I yell at anyone who dares call me on the phone. (I only yell at people I’m close to and who should know better. Everyone else gets a free pass.) I chew sugarless gum and I change pieces every half hour.
What is your idea of earthly happiness? Me in a room with a book I want to read and nobody bugging me. Also, a telephone in the unlikely event that I get a hankering for human contact.
What is the best concert you’ve ever been to? I never go to concerts. I dislike emoting in public. I think it’s unseemly.
What are you currently working on? This Side of Jealousy. It’s the sequel to The Innocents and even sexier if you can believe it. You probably can’t but it’s true, I swear!

She knew it was weird - beyond weird, sick, really – to blame a dead girl for her troubles, but she couldn’t help herself.

This was a great week to launch our Things We Are Ridiculously Excited About feature, because guess what arrived in the office yesterday? Our Breathless Reads slipcases! Which, you guessed it, we’re ridiculously excited about! These slipcases contain advanced reader copies of all five of the Fall 2012 Breathless Reads titles (Origin by Jessica Khoury, The Innocents by Lili Peloquin, Venom by Fiona Paul, Black City by Elizabeth Richards, and Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes), which we’re so excited to share with the world. Plus, they’re super pretty, and that gorgeous gold color is really brightening up the office. :)
These slipcases will be going out to industry professionals, traditional media, and select bloggers, but we will also be giving a few away on our Breathless Reads Facebook page throughout the summer, so if you haven’t become a fan of Breathless already, be sure to head over and like the page! We also have a Breathless Reads Tumblr which we’ll be posting content on throughout the Breathless Fall 2012 campaign (and beyond), so make sure to follow us there as well!
We have a new Breathless Reads Tumblr! Funny story; back in the Penguin Five days, we had a Tumblr, but then I, um…forgot the password. SO, it’s a whole new day for Breathless on Tumblr. Follow it for all the latest news on these awesome books!
